What potential complications lurk behind the patient’s
medical history that may impact dental hygiene therapy, alter treatment plans and
perhaps even result in medical emergencies? Armed only with a summary of past
and current disease states and a list of current medications, will you be able
to decipher the clues, solve the mysteries and employ innovative treatment
strategies to save the day?
This program provides an overview of the
dental hygiene implications of not only the prescription and OTC drugs,
supplements and substances frequently used by patients, but also medications
frequently used in your dental office. Special emphasis will be placed on
providing practical tools you can apply every day in
interpreting a patient’s medical history and understanding the impact on
patient care.
By attending this program, you will be able
to:
- Discuss the medications, supplements and substances
most frequently encountered on a patient’s medical history and their impact on dental
hygiene therapy
-
Describe the medications frequently used in the
dental office (anesthetics, analgesics and anti-infectives) and their impact on a
patient’s systemic illness and their treatment
- Explore potential undiagnosed systemic illness
which may be present in a patient who is self-medicating to treat signs and
symptoms but not the underlying condition itself
-
Identify opportunities
to refer patients for necessary collaborative care
