Diagnosis and Management of Athletic-Related Traumatic Dental Injuries

Dental trauma is a common dental emergency, particularly in children and young adults. The ability of the dental team to diagnose and manage dental trauma in the short and long term can make a monumental difference in patient-related outcomes. The course will overview real-life patient-based examples highlighting the different types of athletic-related traumatic dental injuries, their initial and long-term management strategies as well as prevention protocols that are recommended to minimize the effect of such injuries.


At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Overview of traumatic Dental injuries with emphasis on athletic-related dental and facial injuries
  • Review diagnosis and treatment of dental traumatic injuries
  • Understand guidelines for immediate and long-term management of traumatic dental injuries

Meet the speaker:

Ibrahim Duqum, MS, BDS, FICD, Professor of Prosthodontics and the Director for Clinical Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Adams School of Dentistry. Formerly he served as the Pre-doctoral Prosthodontics Director at the Division of Comprehensive Oral Health and the Director of the Division of Prosthodontics in the Department of Restorative Sciences at UNC Adams School of Dentistry. Dr. Duqum completed his DDS degree in Dentistry from the faculty of Dentistry at the University of Jordan in 1997 and a certificate and an M.S. Degree in Prosthodontics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2008. He is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists and the American Dental Education Association Leadership Institute and a member of numerous dental organizations.
