ANNUAL JOHN J. CUNAT CDE EVENT Friday, June 5, 2026 Westin Buffalo
Impaction Masterclass: Diagnosis, Timing, Outcomes & PitfallsImpacted teeth are among the most challenging problems in orthodontics, yet clinical attention often focuses mainly on maxillary canines. This masterclass will address canines but broaden the perspective, providing an evidence-based framework for also managing incisors and molars. Although tooth type varies, the determinants of success remain the same and follow the “Impaction Equation”: accurate 3D localization combined with optimal timing of intervention. Using clinical case studies, from predictable successes to complex failures, I will highlight the most frequent and costly pitfalls in diagnosis, surgical exposure, anchorage planning, and mechanotherapy. Participants will learn how to:
· Recognize the dental and skeletal effects of a severe impaction · Decide on the ideal timing for initiating the orthodontic eruption

Struggling with Impacted Canines? Management of Impacted Canines with a Straight Wire Approach using Passive Self-Ligation Mechanics
Orthodontic management of impacted canines is often reported by clinicians as one of the most challenging aspects of orthodontic treatment. It is commonplace to use adjunctive appliances and heavy base wires to provide anchorage to assist in their eruption. What many orthodontists often miss is that the surgical procedure is the first key to success when managing impacted canines. To this end, the course will review how the orthodontist can work with their surgeons to ensure the surgical procedure provides them with the best chance of success. The second key is the use of passive self-ligation mechanics. With thorough review of mechanical systems, attendees will learn how to easily and consistently bring in impacted canines.
