EVIDENCE-BASED CONTEMPORARY PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY Friday, October 16, 2015 8:15 am - 11:15 am (3 CE hrs) Room: 101-D
This informational, contemporary, evidence-based and
entertaining presentation will explore the foundation of pediatric dentistry
from the womb through adolescence and beyond. It will include the principles of evidence-based decisions
in every day practice. Topics
covered will be early visits vs. traditional scheduling, caries risk
assessment, non-nutritive sucking habits, behavior guidance, radiology
guidelines, restorative, pulp therapy, traumatic injuries, oral and systemic
health relationships, and the transition from pediatric to adult oral health
care. Course
Objectives: ·
Conduct a quick search for evidence to support a
treatment decision. ·
Define policies, guidelines, standards and
endorsements. ·
Support treatment planning based on caries risk
assessment. ·
Describe the effects of prolonged non-nutritive
sucking habits. ·
Understand how societal changes influence child and
parent behavior in the dental office. ·
Describe the up-dated ADA/FDA Radiology Guidelines. ·
Know what really has to happen to protect the
medically fragile child for dental care. ·
Understand how high-risk activities used by
adolescents can affect their oral health. ·
Balance evidence-based with personalized care for
restorative and pulpal therapy ·
Know the limits of trauma. ·
Be prepared for the Affordable Care Act: compliance
and documentation. Recommended

He has authored over 300 publications including three books,
31 text chapters and seven monographs in the areas of pediatric dentistry, care
of children with special health care needs, and dental education. His research
interests include oral health of children with special health care needs,
health services research, and oral health disparity. He is currently director of the AAPD Oral Health Policy Research Center. He is a member of a number of professional organizations
including the American Dental Association, American Association for Dental
Research, and the American Dental Education Association and is a member of
Omicron Kappa Upsilon honor fraternity, a fellow in AAPD, and the Royal College
of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He currently is a delegate to the American Dental Association,
and he served as president of the Columbus Dental Society in 2008. He is currently Director of the AAPD Oral Health Policy Research
